Specialized Care for Para Athletes

Every para athlete is unique. Physiotherapy should consider not only the athlete's diagnosis or disability, but also their age, stage of development, sport, equipment, classification, training goals, and how they move through daily life.

Melissa combines extensive physiotherapy experience with specialized expertise in pediatric neurological rehabilitation and para sport. Her clinical background includes working with athletes across the lifespan—from children learning new movement skills to adults competing at high-performance levels.

Her experience includes:

  • Pediatric and adult physiotherapy

  • Neurological and neuromuscular rehabilitation

  • Working with recreational, competitive, and high-performance para athletes

  • Experience supporting athletes with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, acquired brain injury, limb difference, and other physical disabilities

  • Swim Canada Medical Classifier

  • Coaching para swimmers and artistic swimmers

  • Working with adaptive movement and sport-specific performance

  • Sport-specific movement analysis

  • Injury prevention and return-to-sport rehabilitation

  • Individualized exercise prescription

  • Long-term athletic development

Treatment is always individualized to the athlete's goals, recognizing that no two para athletes move in exactly the same way.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy can help para athletes improve movement quality, optimize performance, recover from injury, and build confidence in sport.

Athletes and families commonly seek care for:

  • Pain during or after training or competition

  • Shoulder, neck, wrist, hip, knee, or back pain

  • Overuse injuries

  • Difficulty returning to sport after injury or surgery

  • Reduced strength, endurance, balance, or coordination

  • Changes in gait, propulsion, transfers, or sport-specific movement

  • Optimizing wheelchair mobility or running mechanics

  • Equipment, orthotic, or prosthetic concerns affecting movement

  • Fatigue that limits participation

  • Injury prevention

  • Improving sport performance

  • Classification preparation or understanding movement limitations

  • Building confidence when returning to competition

  • Letters of support for international sport classification

Many athletes are not injured. They simply want to move more efficiently, improve performance, or continue participating in sport safely over the long term.

Why Choose NeuroAlchemy Wellness?

Melissa's experience extends beyond traditional physiotherapy. Having worked in pediatric neurology, neuromuscular rehabilitation, adaptive sport, coaching, and athlete classification, she understands that successful rehabilitation means more than recovering from injury—it means helping each athlete achieve their own definition of success.

Whether that means walking onto a playing field for the first time, returning to competition after an injury, improving efficiency in the pool, or preparing for national competition, treatment is designed around what matters most to you.
